Being a Healthy & Strong Educator

Being a teacher and having many friends that are teachers, I know we all struggle with a great deal of stress and have trouble finding time to take care of ourselves during the school year.

Over this past year I have been using P90X: Tony Horton’s 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program and I highly recommend it for any busy, stressed out teacher.

I am a very skeptical person by nature and I am not one to usually purchase things offered in TV infomercials. Having said that, I am extremely pleased with the quality of P90X. It has been totally worth it and I can honestly recommend this program to anyone interested in getting into better shape.

Getting Older

This year I turned 35 and I am definitely starting to feel older in my body. During the 2009-2010 school year in addition to teaching full time, I was cramming for the dreaded GRE and filling out applications for grad school. As a result, I did not get much exercise and spent much of my time outside of school sitting in a chair reading and writing. At school I noticed myself become more and more sluggish and out of shape as the year wore on.

In the past I have done a variety of things for exercise. I have walked, ran, lifted weight sporadically. I belonged to a gym for several years but felt frustrated because, between driving to and from the gym, it took a huge chunk of my limited time. All in all, I felt like I was never able to figure out what kinds of exercise to do to effectively counteract the feelings of aging.

I Want a Coach!

Growing up I was involved with sports from an early age. My primary experience with exercise was social and had to do with being part of a team. As a member of a team, I would show up ready to work hard, and my coach (who knew what he was doing) would tell me what to do. As the athlete I didn’t really need to think about creating my own workout, I just showed up!

In all areas of my life I try so hard to figure out and make the best decisions. When I am teaching, I am constantly striving to engage and reach all my students. If I am buying a car, I strive to purchase the best used car for the lowest price. I am constantly reading and learning and trying to find the best way of doing things.

However, when it comes to exercise I realized I don’t want to have to think about it – at all. I just want someone (who knows what they are doing) to tell me what to do. I want to return to that time in my life when I was an athlete, showed up to practice ready to work hard, and my coach told me what to do.

Enter P90X

This past summer an old high school friend of mine mentioned doing P90X on Facebook. I am extremely skeptical of informercials and “Sold on TV” products, so I asked about his experience (It was positive). I then started viewing people’s P90X: Tony Horton’s 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program videos on YouTube and was impressed that so many regular, everyday people were posting positive review videos. After talking to my friend, reading many people’s reviews on various websites, and watching several videos, I finally decided to purchase a copy of P90X: Tony Horton’s 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program. I can honestly say that this was one of the best investments I have made for myself.

I am enjoying working through this program and definitely notice several positive health benefits, including:

  • I am much stronger
  • I have much more energy
  • My blood pressure is consistently in the healthy range
  • My total cholesterol dropped 26 points, and my triglycerides went down 55 points during the past year when I have been doing P90X

Though there are a few typos in some of the written materials and the DVD case is not the best quality, the quality of the program itself is very high! The P90X program includes:

Do Your Best, Forget the Rest

One of the often repeated phrases in P90X is, “Do your best and forget the rest!” I really try to take this to heart and just do my best. Sometimes my “best” is working through the program as it is specified, other times it is working out every other day. Each time I work out though, I feel like I am making progress and when I am finished I feel great!

Final Thoughts

As professional educators, we get pushed and pulled every direction during the course of the year. We work hard each day, spending long hours helping others become the best that they can become. If you are like me, you might struggle to find a healthy balance between your profession (or calling), your family, and yourself.

Fitness and exercise is something you can do for yourself that not only makes you feel and look great, but gives you more energy to devote to your family and your classroom.
